WOCAT is an established global network of sustainable land management (SLM) specialists, contributing to SLM by sharing and evaluating knowledge.
WOCAT’s goal is to prevent and reduce land degradation through SLM technologies and implementation approaches. WOCAT provides tools and methods for knowledge management and decision support.
Since its initial launch in 1992, WOCAT has developed standardised SLM methods and tools and established a harmonised knowledge-management system. They have been tested and applied in many countries around the world. Through the growing WOCAT network and database, numerous SLM experiences are exchanged and guidelines for best SLM practices are in continuous development. Various books incorporating WOCAT knowledge show SLM practices in an attractive format and demonstrate their benefits for food security and livelihood, climate change, and water availability. They attest to the utility of a sound knowledge-management system in promoting and up-scaling SLM.
WOCAT operates in a decentralised manner through regional and national initiatives coordinated by CDE,
FAO, and
ISRIC.
